Three Reasons to Buy Side Property Turkey
Side Property Turkey is set to be a big seller in 2010 as people explore outwards from the most popular tourism areas, sparking property booms in the smaller towns like Side. Side has a lot going for it, in fact it has practically everything a destination needs to be considered a good place to buy property for investment and/or as a lifestyle choice, here are 3 reasons anyone thinking of buying a property in Turkey should consider Side.
1: Accessibility
It has become a prerequisite of a destination worthy of consideration as a place to purchase property that it be close to an airport serviced by regular international flights. Side is just 55km (approx 30 minutes drive) away from Antalya airport. Antalya is one of Turkey’s top tourist resorts and as such the airport is well covered from almost every major destination in the world, including many flights from almost every airport in the UK, including flights by budget carriers Ryanair and Easyjet.
What’s more, at a time when property buyers are being advised to check the accessibility of an airport currently, because of flights being reduced and cancelled, flights to Antalya airport are continually being increased, with several new routes to the airport being announced in the last 6 months alone.
2: Near the Beach, Shops and Restaurants
Another prerequisite in a successful property purchase is that the property be within walking distance of the beach, of shops and of various dining options. Because Side is a coastal town (former fishing village), that actually spans out into the Mediterranean sea on a headland, with plenty of shops and restaurants, you can easily buy a property in Side, that is within walking distance of all these things.
3: Long Season, Activity All Year Round
Another prerequisite is that a destination has a long season, and preferably is not completely dead off season either. Side property Turkey also meets this criterion, with 300 days of sunshine per year, long hot summers, and mild winters, Side is always open to tourists.

Side Property Turkey: History Makes for a Bright Future
I just read a great post titled “Side Property: The Ultimate Package” on the Spot Blue (Turkish agent) Turkey property blog. The post detailed how Side has everything that property buyers look for, plenty of shops and dining options, proximity to an airport (accessibility), and a long season, as well as the holiday package that attracts holiday home buyers (great beaches, warm climate, and plenty of activities).
Whilst I agree with the post completely, I wanted to pick out what I feel is one of Side’s strongest points, but that the post covered only as part of the town’s activities: the history of the town.
Side has a history dating back to 700BC (Before Christ), when it was founded by Greek settlers from Cyme in Aeolis, a region of western Anatolia.
There is very little information from then until 333BC, when Side came under the occupation of Alexander the Great, and then his generals Ptolemy I Soter when Alexander died just 10 years later.
Next came the Seleucid Empire, in the second century BC, who ruled Side as overlords until they were defeated by a Greek fleet with the backing of Rome and Pergamum. The Seleucid Kind Antiochous was then forced by the treaty of Apamea to hand-over all of Asia Minor north of the Taurus Mountains to Pergamum.
Side was outside the bounds of this agreement, and so was autonomous until it was taken over by Cilician pirates in the First century BC. The Cilician’s had a short reign though, because Side became part of the Roman Empire in 67BC and this lasted until the 3rd century AD.
During all these occupations, Side flourished, managing to maintain a certain level of autonomy, growing prosperous, and becoming an important cultural center.
But from the fourth century on, but for a few brief revivals, Side saw an almost constant decline. A combination of earthquakes, Christian zealots and Arab raids, left the site abandoned by the 10th century, its citizens having emigrated to nearby Antalya.[2] After a further brief revival in the 12th century, Side’s inhabitants once again left the town for Antalya, at which point Side became known as Eski Adalia ("Old Antalya"). Side was buried until Greek Muslim refugees from Crete moved to the ruined town and called it Selimiye in 1895. This was the beginning of the Side that we know today, the coastal resort and popular tourism destination in modern-day Turkey.
Today tourists to Side can enjoy many ruins from the city great historical tale. Among the most notable is the great Amphitheatre, built in the style of a roman amphitheatre, and with seating for 15,000-20,000. The theatre is in surprisingly good condition. As are the city walls, including the huge Hellenistic main gate, which is not in such good shape (well, it is from 200BC). Through the gate takes you onto the colonnaded street, which leads down to the well preserved Roman Bath, the a public bath, which has been restored into a museum. All of this is well worth the walk.
For anyone not already tired out there is also the Tych and Fortuna temple from 200BC, the Roman Temple of Dionysus, an Aqueduct and a nymphaeum.
There are many other Turkish towns and cities that have such vast and varied histories, but very few that have so many remnants that you can see, touch and imagine being there. This, on top of the other attributes covered in the article linked above (and here), it is easy to see why we believe Side’s tourism industry and property market have such a bright future.
Talking of which, I also saw in the article, that Spot Blue are currently marketing a good deal on 4 bedroom villas in a raised development 800 meters inland for less than £200k each.
5 Reasons to Buy Side Property Turkey
The former fishing village of Side on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast is set to be one of the most popular destinations in the world with foreign buyers this year. Here are some of the reasons why Side property Turkey is a good buy in 2010:
1: Year Round Warm Climate:
Side is what you expect in a Mediterranean destination, long hot summers and short mild winters. The average temperature is 24-25 degrees centigrade, with summer highs in the 30s. Several days of 40 degrees centigrade is common at the height of summer.
Day time temperatures average highs above 20°C are seen from April till November with average highs above 30°C between June and September. The summer months see next to no rain. Sunny days are the norm, with most days enjoying 11 hours of uninterrupted sunshine. The winter is from December till February, at which point 6 degrees centigrade is the average low.
2: All Amenities in Town and Airport Nearby
Side has all amenities including things like doctors, and chemists, as well as supermarkets and shops to buy holiday essentials. As is covered above the season is long, but the shops are mostly open off-season, which is essential to the success of a property investment.
The nearest airport is Antalya, which is 34 miles west of Side, and is accessible from most places in the world, with many flights from the UK including those from budget carriers Easyjet and Ryanair.
3: The Harbour and Coast:
Side’s harbour is absolutely beautiful, the perfect setting for a romantic meal in one of the nearby restaurants. The coast is equally beautiful with its sandy beaches, warm waters and secluded bays.
4: History and Culture:
Side has history dating back to the seventh century Before Christ (BC), when Alexander the Great was linked with the town, and then throughout the Roman era the town held importance. This means it has literally dozens of ruins to explore.
On the culture side, Side is near enough smack bang in the middle of Turkey’s southern coast. This means that it has a mixture of the Middle East’s Arab and Muslim cultures, and the secular cultures emanating from Europe. The people are known for being incredibly friendly.
5: Dining Options
The mix of cultures also means a mixture of different dining options, including many British style cafes and restaurants. This is widely regarded as being essential to the success of a holiday rentals property.
If this article has wet your appetite for side property, Spot Blue are currently marketing a development of 4 bedroom villas in a raised development 800 meters inland, at prices below £200k. The villas have fitted kitchens, air-conditioning, marble floors and balconies with views of the swimming pool and the mountains. But there are only 4 remaining so act quickly.
Side Villas Turkey: The Perfect Place to Enjoy the Med
Side (pronounced See-Day) is a quaint former fishing town on Turkey’s south Mediterranean coastline. Because the town slopes upwards from the sea and harbour, the views from many parts of the town — and from many of the Side properties for sale — are truly breathtaking,
When I say Side property Turkey in this post, it is simply because of the ambiguity that arises from saying Side property, people can often think, side what? Also, I don’t know about you, but I have searched for Side villas, and seen the results that you get, which have nothing to do with a town on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Side is an untouched gem, one of many to be found in Turkey. Whereas before the crunch, everyone bought in the hotspots, because we all now know that overdevelopment is terrible, more and more people are looking outward from the hotspots, to undiscovered spots like Side, thus making them discovered.
That being said: compared to some of the so-called Mediteranean resort towns, Side is the perfect spot for a Mediteranean holiday, with something for all the family.
Not only does it have gorgeous beaches, and a lovely harbour offering charter boat trips, but it has lots of shops and restaraunts, including things like clothes and shoe shops, dare I say it; to keep the ladies happy while the men-folk are on a chartered fishing trip – there I said it.
Many of the properties for sale in Side also boast incredible views out over the coast, the harbour and the sea.
Spot Blue are currently marketing some 4 bedroom villas in a raised development 800 meters back from the sea and incredibly, at prices under £200k. The villas have fitted kitchens, air-conditioning, marble floors and balconies with views of the swimming pool and the mountains. Unsurprisingly there are only 4 villas left on the small development, which has off-street parking, and a communal swimming pool.
